Solo Trip Revelations: Discovering Inner Strength and Joy

Solo Cruise Part II
“As you travel solo, being totally responsible for yourself, it’s inevitable that you will discover just how capable you are.” ~ Unknown

The moment of truth has arrived. Your solo trip is booked and planned, and it is time to go. That first step can be daunting, but remember: millions of people take the leap and discover a strength they never knew they had. I have been in your shoes, feeling that familiar flutter of nerves mixed with excitement. But as I settled into my chair at the airport, a wave of exhilaration washed over me. Tears swelled in the corner of my eyes— not of fear but of pure joy and liberation. You might feel the same, and that is something to embrace.

Flight 1: SFO to Dulles My journey began with a long layover at Dulles International. Here’s a pro tip to get your trip started right: Take advantage of airport lounges! The peace and quiet of the United Club helped me relax and recharge before the next leg of my journey. Do not be afraid to treat yourself a little – you are worth it!

A Chance Encounter Before boarding, I met a fascinating woman working on a plastic canvas project. Moments like these remind you of the incredible people you will meet on your journey. We bonded over shared interests and exchanged stories. (I used to do Plastic Canvas artwork.) You never know who you might meet, and that’s part of the magic.

Flight 2: Dulles to FCO (Rome) Before I settled in my seat, I took out my in-flight essentials: Phone, charger, headphones, snacks, water, seatbelt extender, pillow, and blanket. (it gets chilly at 35,000 feet!). Tip: Pack your own cozy travel blanket – you never know how cold the plane might get!

Cruisers Unite! As we took off, I struck up a conversation with my seatmate, who was also headed for a cruise. Before I knew it, we had a little cruise community going, swapping stories and tips. This is your journey, and the people you meet along the way can make it unforgettable. Do not be shy – reach out, introduce yourself, and see where the conversation takes you.

Before long, sleep claimed me. The drone of the engines lulled me into a restful doze.

Rome, Here I Come! Waking up an hour and a half before landing, my excitement grew with every descending mile. This is what you have been working towards, and the moment is finally here. Allow yourself to feel the excitement and anticipation—you have earned it!

Navigating Rome’s Airport Navigating FCO Airport in a wheelchair presented its challenges. I walked off the plane to a waiting wheelchair, then transferred to a golf cart, then onto another wheelchair, and finally down an elevator to yet another wheelchair. At last, I arrived in a waiting area for assisted travelers. After a 20-minute wait, I was wheeled to my luggage. My driver called to let me know where he was, and this time, an airport employee escorted me to the pickup area. Seeing my name on that sign dissolved all my earlier frustration. I offered to tip the workers, but they graciously refused.

Tip: Research Tipping Customs Before traveling abroad, brush up on local tipping customs. You might be surprised when tipping is not expected or is even considered impolite.

Civitavecchia, My Home Away from Home At The Port Inn Civitavecchia, Anna greeted me with a warm hug. We kept in touch during my journey, and it was wonderful to finally meet in person. I adored my room, though it was not fully wheelchair accessible. The bathroom had a small step, but for those who can manage a single step, it would be suitable. And do not worry – there is an elevator to ensure access to your room.

To ensure your room or hotel is fully accessible, consider the following elements:

Spacious and clutter-free spaces with automatic doors and adjustable beds.

  • Roll-in showers, wider doors, and lower furniture for easy access.
  • Buzzers with flashing lights for hearing-impaired guests.
  • Equal reservation options for guests with disabilities, both online and by phone.
  • Prioritize hotels that clearly mention accessible accommodations on their website.

Remember, accessibility varies by individual needs. It’s essential to do research and understand the specific requirements that you will need for a comfortable experience.

Exploring on My Own After a refreshing nap, I set out to conquer Civitavecchia. I was a little apprehensive at first, but I soon found my rhythm. At a cozy café, I met a friendly local who helped me order a delicious panini. The panini was good, and the owner of the café was extremely nice. It felt good sitting at the outdoor table, embracing Italy on my own. I really did feel at home.

Remember, this is your journey, and it is okay to take things at your own pace. Embrace the unknown, and do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Tip: Do not be shy – the people you meet help to make your trip unforgettable.

A Mall Mishap: My mission was to find a specific jewelry store at the outdoor mall. The jewelry shop was not open yet when I arrived, so I wandered the mall, camera in hand, capturing the sights. I felt surprisingly at ease, despite being alone in a foreign country. Finally, the jewelry store opened its doors and purchased my travel charms.

Important note: Be wary of people approaching you with “free” jewelry. It is likely a scam!

As I prepared to head back to my B&B, I realized the cab number I had was incomplete and did not work. I looked for a taxi on the street, but none drove by, and panic set in. I was tired from my flight, and I had no idea how I would get back. (Here’s the thing: setbacks are inevitable, but it is how you respond that defines your journey. Stay calm, think clearly, and remember that a solution is always within reach.)

Saved by Anna: I walked over to the Gigi Bar to have them call me a taxi when I remembered Anna. I sent her a message on WhatsApp explaining my situation. She was at her other property across the street from the bar. She met me at the bar and sprang into action, calling a taxi and getting me safely back to the B&B. When I got back to my room, I got ready for the next day, ensuring I had everything I needed at hand to board the ship. Do not be afraid to lean on the people who are there to support you – that is what they are there for! And remember, every challenge you overcome makes you stronger and more resilient.

It had not been a perfect day, but it had been an adventure! And as I settled into bed, I knew this was just the beginning of an unforgettable solo journey. If I can do it, you can too. The world is waiting – go out there and make it yours!

And that is just the beginning of my solo cruising adventure. Stay tuned for more tales from the high seas!
