SOME OF THE MOST STYLISH TRAVEL DESTINATIONS

True places never are, as Herman Melville stated in Moby-Dick, and it is not marked on any map. Although this opinion could have been valid in 1851, it is tragically no longer true in this day and age, when the inhabitants of the world’s most isolated, saltwater-blasted outcrop—which they refer to as “bijou, but breezy”—will begin constructing shell-based homes that they will rent out. But worry not—there are still fantastic and chic places to visit. And for every a thousand travelers flying to Cancun, Egypt, or Croatia, there’s a shrewd vacationer holding an airline ticket who has somewhere a bit less obvious in mind. For your upcoming trip, these are the ones you should include under your sun hat.

BHUTAN

Bhutan is a landlocked country that is less than half the size of Ireland, and most visitors just bring a well-worn passport with them. Nestled between China and India, this ancient, mostly Buddhist region is sparsely populated and features Himalayan peaks and beautiful jungles to the south. However, some opulent lodgings may be found as the region has realized the benefits of tourism.

Six Senses resorts run some of the most outstanding properties in terms of architecture; its five lodges, which are dispersed around Bhutan, are relatively young yet are already regarded as design classics. This is Six Senses Punakha, and while the trip will cost a substantial amount, it is well worth it.

DOHA, QATAR

Many travelers have crossed off Dubai and Abu Dhabi from their list of must-see places, but Qatar, the neighboring country, also has a secret weapon in the form of the seaside city of Doha. It boasts an incredible skyline, a thriving arts scene, and, of course, a plethora of brand-new stadiums constructed in anticipation of the 2022 World Cup. The city’s Museum of Islamic Art is a boldly angular structure that looks amazing at night and displays some of the most significant items in the region. It was designed by rockstar architect I.M. Pei, the same guy who created the glass pyramid at the Louvre. Pei came out of retirement to create the museum.

Similar to Dubai, Doha boasts a diverse population, allowing for the consumption of five-star cuisine from around the globe.

BACALAR, MEXICO

Where did you spend your most enjoyable beach vacation that didn’t involve going into the water? Where is that? Bacalar. Similar to the Maldives, this relatively undiscovered lagoon in Mexico is located approximately 20 km inland from the Caribbean and offers all the amenities of the sun-kissed Indian Ocean islands.

When you visit Bacalar, you’ll be close to Belize, where the water is occasionally a brilliant deep blue and other times a beautiful turquoise. The town that shares the lake’s name is small, rustic, and frequently referred to as “the real Mexico.” It is along the lake’s western edge.

MATERA, ITALY

A few hours from the Amalfi Coast, Matera is a historic cliff-top location that felt deserted five or six decades ago. Families would gather in the caves dug into the limestone foundations, sharing their animals. It would be an understatement to suggest that this 7,000-year-old metropolis has been given new vitality. As the 2019 European Capital of Culture (a title it shares with Valetta, Malta), some of the historic caves have been converted into chic hotels, so guests may now sleep in style. This is the 2.0 caveman.

ARLES, FRANCE

Had you visited Bilbao, Spain in 1997, you would have been well ahead of the hordes of tourists who were insatiably fascinated with architecture. In the South of France, not far from Marseilles, the medium-sized city of Arles is now providing trend-spotters with a similar opportunity. Once again, we can thank Frank Gehry. However, rather than designing a Guggenheim museum, the architect chose to build a twisted, mountainous tower that serves as the centerpiece of the Luma, a 20-acre arts center.

Though Arles boasts a strong artistic heritage—Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin actually had a residence there in 1888—many first-time visitors are taken aback by the city’s enormous Roman amphitheater, which is still used for events throughout the year.
